The Blankenburg Connection: a new link for accessibility and liveability
- EIFFEL Project Controls

The Blankenburg Connection (A24) is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. It forms a crucial new link between the A20 and the A15, west of Rotterdam. With tunnels running under both land and water, the project improves access to the Port of Rotterdam while also protecting the surrounding environment. EIFFEL Projects advises Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat) on environmental management, helping to realize the connection as smoothly and carefully as possible.
The project
The A24 connects the A20 near Vlaardingen with the A15 near Rozenburg. The route consists largely of (land) tunnels, including a tunnel under Het Scheur. This design ensures the new highway fits seamlessly into the landscape. In addition to building the A24, the A20 is also being widened. That improves traffic flow and reduces pressure on existing routes such as the A15 and the Benelux Corridor. The opening is planned for 2024.
The Blankenburg Connection is more than a logistical improvement. It is a project that takes liveability, nature, and community involvement seriously.

Our role
Environmental management is central to this project. It goes beyond informing local residents and stakeholders. The goal is active involvement. From kitchen table conversations and in-person meetings to digital participation through an interactive website: the community has a real voice in the process.
Our strategic environmental management advisor supports Public Works with guidance on how and when community participation makes a difference. That includes identifying sensitive moments, setting up participation processes, and structurally improving collaboration between the project team and its surroundings.
What we are proud of
We are proud to contribute to a project that does not just deliver an infrastructure solution. It explicitly considers the impact on people and nature. The Blankenburg Connection demonstrates how large-scale infrastructure projects and community participation can go hand in hand. Sound environmental management keeps the project not only technically strong, but also supported by society.
