Enexis has signed the first contract with Eneco to prevent overload on the electricity grid. In Farmsum, the grid is reaching maximum capacity, threatening congestion. Eneco now adjusts the power generation of a wind project to match available capacity. During peak moments, Eneco generates less power so Enexis can prevent congestion.

The Challenge of Grid Congestion

The electricity grid is becoming overloaded in more and more locations due to rapid electrification of industry and consumers. Once the grid is full, no new clients can be connected. In some regions, congestion occurs: more power is demanded or generated than the grid can handle. The solution? Expand the grid—but that takes time, personnel and materials. Until then, smarter use of the existing grid is essential. This is called congestion management. The first contract with Eneco is an important step in this direction.

Working Together on a Solution

Enexis and EIFFEL work closely together on establishing and implementing congestion management. EIFFEL was involved from the start, immediately after regulations made this possible. The team has now grown into a full unit handling both client contact and administrative processing. A dedicated team of Enexis employees and EIFFEL consultants works daily to close contracts like the one with Eneco. The first contract is a tangible reward after months of preparation.

Beyond implementation, EIFFEL also works on knowledge transfer within Enexis, including through a training program. Thanks to their experienced consultants, EIFFEL helps translate complex challenges into practical execution. The Enexis project is a good example of this.

Strength of Collaboration

"It's extremely valuable to have experienced Enexis employees work with ambitious EIFFEL consultants," says Remco Rooker, manager Large Business XL at Enexis. "In 6 months, we built a strong team that not only implements congestion management but also serves clients. Now let's keep going and offer the next flexibility products!"

When I see the passion our consultants bring to this, it makes me proud. The first congestion contract is a great milestone. On to the next!

EIFFEL also looks back with satisfaction. "We truly work in co-creation with Enexis," says Wolfswinkel. "Grid congestion is becoming an increasingly large problem and affects many societal challenges. More and more clients ask whether we can deploy our expertise for this. This contract is an important milestone—and we are eager to keep building."
